Reiki, pronounced “Ray-Key,” is a Japanese energy healing practice that supports the body’s natural ability to restore balance and well-being.
The word Reiki combines two Japanese concepts:
- Rei — Universal wisdom or spiritual consciousness
- Ki — Life force energy
Together, Reiki can be understood as “universal life force energy.”
During a Reiki session, the practitioner serves as a channel for this energy, allowing it to flow through the practitioner’s hands to support the areas of the body, mind, and spirit that are most in need of balance. Reiki is non-invasive, gentle, and deeply relaxing. Many people experience a sense of calm, clarity, emotional release, or renewed vitality following a session.
How Reiki Supports Healing
The human body naturally seeks balance and harmony. Life experiences, stress, emotional challenges, trauma, and physical strain can sometimes create energetic disruptions that affect our overall well-being.
Reiki works by supporting the body’s natural healing processes and helping restore the flow of energy throughout the system. Rather than treating symptoms alone, Reiki addresses energetic imbalances that may contribute to physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual discomfort.
Every Reiki experience is unique. Reiki meets each person where they are in their journey and supports the body’s natural capacity for balance, healing, and renewal.
Reiki is not intended to change who you are, but to support your body’s natural capacity for balance and your own process of growth and healing.

A Tradition Rooted in Lineage
Reiki was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan during the early twentieth century.
Following his spiritual awakening and development of the Reiki system, Dr. Usui taught many students throughout Japan. Before his passing in 1926, he entrusted Dr. Chujiro Hayashi with carrying the teachings forward.
Dr. Hayashi further refined and organized the Reiki system before sharing it with Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the Western world. Through this lineage, Reiki has been passed from teacher to student for generations.
Karla Lee Kuester is honored to carry forward this tradition and remains committed to preserving the integrity and spirit of these teachings.
